Memory errors are not always the chip

A memory error does not always mean the memory is bad. It could be a cold solder joint instead, under the core or under the memory itself.

So before we replace anything, we find out which it is.

How we find the real fault

Once the memory is off the board, we just measure the voltage drop on the data points. What we read tells us where the fault is.

  • A line reads open. The connection is broken further down, under the core. We reball the core and investigate.
  • The values all read similar. The connections are good, so it was most likely a cold solder joint. We reball the same chip back on.

Only if the error still persists do we replace the chip.
