MELTED POWER CONNECTOR

Melted 12VHPWR connector? We repair it.

The 12VHPWR (16-pin) connector carries a lot of power through a small plug. When it is not fully seated, or under sustained high load, the pins can overheat and melt. It is most common on the RTX 4090, 4080 SUPER, 4080 and 5090. The good news is that the connector and the area around it are usually repairable.

What the damage usually looks like

The plug or socket is melted or discoloured

The connector itself has overheated. We replace the connector and check the solder pads underneath, which often take heat damage too.

There is scorching on the board around the connector

The heat has reached the pads or nearby traces. We repair the damaged pads and traces as part of the connector work.

What we do about it

  • Assess the burn under magnification before quoting.
  • Replace the 12VHPWR connector.
  • Repair heat-damaged solder pads and nearby traces.
  • Test the card under full load before it ships back.

A melted connector means a new connector, along with any solder pads or traces the heat has damaged around it.
